Strings
By Jasmine Corbett
I am one person,
Insignificant and unrecognized,
Small and ineffective,
Waiting for my purpose in life
To smack me in my face,
Tearing flesh from my cheek,
So I can get in place
For a change. My change.
Time to get out of formation,
Cut the strings off my back
And plan a lifelong vacation.
To the world, I’m but a speck,
Floating through an ignorant mass
Of those who won’t even check
If they have strings attached.
Even though I am now small from separation,
Leaving is the first step to success.
I rely on my imagination
To keep my mind safe from loneliness.
Insignificant and unrecognized,
Small and ineffective,
Waiting for my purpose in life
To smack me in my face,
Tearing flesh from my cheek,
So I can get in place
For a change. My change.
Time to get out of formation,
Cut the strings off my back
And plan a lifelong vacation.
To the world, I’m but a speck,
Floating through an ignorant mass
Of those who won’t even check
If they have strings attached.
Even though I am now small from separation,
Leaving is the first step to success.
I rely on my imagination
To keep my mind safe from loneliness.
