Clairvoyance
By Alicia Bonus
Edmond the Enchanter would prove to his audience, once and for all, that the power of the supernatural could not exist; not in this realm and not in the next. If Harry Houdini, Criss Angel, and the Masked Magician could expose frauds and reveal their own secrets, then so could he. However, the magus (master magician) did not realize what a terrible consequence he was going to encounter, until he met her.
Not only could Edmond the Enchanter make a whole trailer house disappear in front of an entire neighborhood or walk upside down in your living room, but he could expose those who attempted to either fool him or his audience. He would look deep into your soul, reading you your wrongs, revealing your sins and punishing you for your absurdity. He would ridicule you for your ridiculousness, but he would crush your hopes and dreams during the process. This magician was not one to be friends with or to negotiate. He is handsome on the inside but ugly on the outside. Although he wore business-like attire to show he was old enough to be called boss, he grew long wavy brown hair to also show that he was young enough to be called a lady’s man. In the end, he fooled people with his magic, but he fooled them with his ego. Only she could change him.
However, there were reasons why Edmond the Enchanter was like this. And why the scar below his left eye told a story, a story that Edmond himself never wished to tell. It wouldn’t matter anyway. She would tell us.
Edmond the Enchanter’s assistants, Morning Star in her sea foam green and Midnight Moon in her violet purple, welcomed the audience by setting off a short laser show and sparks from the edge of the stage, introducing the one and only Edmond the Enchanter. One of the laser lights spotted a skinny young girl in black hose with black boots, topped with ripped jean shorts and a ripped silver tank top, covered with a tight onyx leather jacket. Covering her face completely in all black, was her hair streaked with two single blonde highlights. She had only shown one eye through her mess of hair when she would catch a glimpse of Edmond performing his most famous magic tricks. Mostly, his tricks dealt with sawing people in half, but with a twist. Instead of sawing thin people in half, he would flatten fat people with a steam roller. Instead of pulling rabbits out of hats, he would pull baby alligators out of toilets. The only difference between Edmond's magic and the other famous magicians' magic is that Edmond’s magic was never revealed, no matter how much people tried to take a guess on him.
“And now, for the moment you all have waited for!”
Edmond the Enchanter took a piece of paper out from his inside pocket jacket. He stared at the paper for a mere second then brought it above his head for all to see. The girl made her way through the crowd without taking her eyes off of the paper until she got to the front of the stage with the other spectators.
“Whoever can guess what is behind this paper, will receive one hundred-thousand dollars cash!” The crowd stirred with excitement, while the girl remained still. She concentrated on the paper.
“So, who can tell me…”
“It’s a photo!”
The girl's’ voice echoed throughout the entire theater. Edmond frantically looked out into his audience.
“Who said that? Who said that?!” His voice was scared and angry. The girl lifted her head up toward the magus and repeated her answer.
“It is a photograph…of your first love.” Edmond's face froze in place. Morning Star and Midnight Moon stopped smiling their quirky smiles, looking worried for their master. They both noticed that something was wrong. Edmond took another hard look at the girl wearing the gothic outfit and punk rocker hairstyle. He noticed that she wasn’t looking directly at him, but at the paper itself. He looked into his audience and then his cameramen, who seemed to be as clueless as he was at the moment.
“Who was this girl? Who was she working for?" he thought
Edmond took a brave step forward, kneeling down in front of the girl near the stage. Edmond was still without an explanation of how this girl would know such things about this photo when nobody else was around to see. All he could do was question her.
“What do you know about this photo?”
“Her name was Ariana. You would call her Ari . She was short with blonde, choppy hair, torn jeans and a yellow tank-top with a brown jacket and cross. She loved you. She wanted to be with you forever. But, you accused her of cheating, so you hit her. You hit her pretty hard with a ring she gave you for your first anniversary together. That ring you still have on your finger. She was bleeding. Then, she hit you back, because she wasn‘t cheating on you. She was also wearing a ring that you had given her as well, for your first anniversary. You both were bleeding pretty bad, but she doesn’t have a scar like you do. She had a bunch of scars…after the car crash.”
The theater was silent, and so were the spectators, including Morning Star, Midnight Moon, and Edmond the Enchanter. He was nervous and frightened, sweating from the top of his scalp to the bottom of his collar.
“How did this girl know? Who was this girl who has figured me out?" he thought.
Edmond had told no one about his past, his love life, or his regrets. He was speechless, but his audience was restless. They wanted to know if the girls’ assumption was true. After much consideration, the astounded magician turned over the picture revealing a photograph of the short young woman with blonde hair, torn jeans, a tank-top with a jacket and cross. The crowd was awed by the gothic girls’ answer. They even cheered for her.
Edmond didn’t know what to say or what to think. All that he could think of was Ariana. He thought about her love and devotion for him. He thought about her cheating on him. And, he thought about her death in the car crash after their fight. And, the fact that she was innocent all along. He not only hurt her emotionally, but physically.
Edmond looked at his right hand. It contained the ring that Ariana had given him during the end of their anniversary dinner. He noticed a trickle of blood that had crept down the hand and had dried. Forming a fist in his hand, Edmond closed his eyes tight and sniffled. No matter how tightly he tried to suck in his tears, they ended up traveling slowly down his cheeks, leaving him to taste the bitterness of his unforgiving and damned soul. He later realized no matter how much you want to take away the supernatural, you just can’t. It will always be there to remind you and haunt you until the end of time.
Edmond was brought back to the stage and got out an envelope of one hundred-thousand dollars from the other side of his jacket pocket. He extended his hand toward the front of the audience to give to the girl, but when his vision had cleared, she was was already gone.

I am currently a senior, studying my major in Creative Writing. I hope to graduate soon in December 2013 and be awarded my Bachelor's Degree in Creative Writing. I'm also hoping to receive a decent job, filing and organizing paperwork, because I love anything that deals with paper and pen. And, even though others depict me as being quiet and collected, I have a lot to say, even if it's written down somewhere on paper with pen.
