Flesh and Stone
By Gigi Hammond-Schrock
When you found me I was made of stone,
A lonely statue
Only pretending to be so proud.
But you watched me until you saw me move,
And then you moved me.
You cleared off all the debris, and made me new again.
You held my hand,
and told me you knew who I really was.
Who I could be.
And you promised me the whole world
And forever.
With a kiss, my fate was sealed,
The spell was lifted, and I returned to flesh.
Oh, how soft and weak is flesh,
But it can feel, far deeper than my stone ever could.
You woke me up and reminded me
Of what I dreamt of before I stood still, for what seemed like a millennia.
And I laid next to you and dreamt a thousand more dreams…
Until one day I rolled over to kiss your cheek,
And it was cold,
and hard,
and rough.
And as hard as I tried, I couldn’t save you.
I couldn’t return the favor.
And it made me wish you had never tried to save me.
Now I’m damned in this weak flesh alone,
While you stand unmovable, as a statue in stone.
About the Author
Hello, my name is Genesis (Gigi) Hammond-Schrock. I am a creative writing and literature major at Cal U, with minors in anthropology and theatre. I rather enjoy the zen feeling editing brings (weird, right?). I'm also a Jill of all trades and like traveling, reading and writing... obviously (but especially poetry), 'historical re-enactment', gathering random information, throwing axes and knives, philosophy, great discussions, close friends, sleeping in with her dog, and watching fine British Television. I am in love with the classics, and my 'vegetable love' keeps growing for Early Modern English works.
